Introducing Traditional Knowledge to Young Generation

 

Within the framework of the project "Revival And The Spread Of Kyrgyz Traditional Knowledge" a great work on raising awareness of young people to the problems of revival of traditional knowledge was done by the authors and implementers of the project.

 

This program was aimed at disseminating information among young people about the nomadic livestock, nomadic culture and way of life, as well as to study the traditional knowledge in practice.

 

Our ancestors rationally used pastures, protected the nature. Therefore we, the new generation, must keep it for the next generations.

Objectives Of The Youth Component

1. Attracting students of universities and colleges to research on identification custodians of traditional knowledge through participation in the "Best Pastoralist, I know" contest.
2. Participation of young people in the Summer Exhibitions on traditional knowledge and practices of the nomadic keepers of  livestock breeding, obtaining information from the custodians of traditional knowledge of nomadic livestock.

3. Presentations of the students about the importance of traditional knowledge in educational institutions.

Exhibition was very interesting and useful. I met a lot of young people interested in traditional knowledge and nomadic animal husbandry. I thank the RDF staff for the opportunity to participate in the exhibition and interesting information.

4. Participation of the students in the second phase of the study, training students within the framework of the project.

 

Achieved Results
- Awareness of young people about  nomadic livestock, pasture, nomadic kyrgyz culture and life, importance of traditional knowledge and its applicability in modern life was raised;

- Participation of young people in traditional knowledge studies and culture of the nomadic animal husbandry;

- Proliferation of traditional knowledge and practices among young farmers and experts.


Participation Of Students In The Northern And Southern Exhibitions

 

19 finalists took part in exhibitions of traditional knowledge in the North and in the South. Exhibitions were held on 5th June, 2009 at Zhashyl-​​Kol pasture of Kok-Oyrok Ayil Okmotu, Kemin region Chui province, and  on 18th July, 2009 in Kok-Zhangak city of Suzak district, Jalalabad province.

 

The program consisted of information and cultural parts.

 

Such activities need to be expanded and hold in many regions of our country. This is the best way to attract young generation’s attention to the forgotten traditions.

Within the framework of information block the students were involved in the organization and preparation of exhibition, presented their materials, and took part in the discussion of  future research of project's second phase. Cultural part of the program included national games - "Kurosh", "Ordo", a fashion show by Tatiana Vorotnikova, as well as a trip to the "Burana" historical-cultural complex.  


During this training students had opportunity to discuss different aspects of traditional knowledge in farming and nomadic culture, share their impressions, and made ​​suggestions and ideas for research in preservation of traditional knowledge. A round table was held in the end of the program. Young people and students participated in this event, which was devoted to  traditional knowledge for further cooperation with students and lessons learned. Upon completion students were awarded with prizes and certificates for active participation in exhibitions of traditional knowledge.
