Empowerment of Vulnerable Forest Communities to Strengthen their Food Security in the Kyrgyz Republic

From 1st of September RDF realized a new project with the purpose to increase food security and improve nutrition of vulnerable communities living near forest areas.

Purpose of the project

To increase food security and improve nutrition of vulnerable communities living near forest areas through the development of joint forest management and procedure of passing  management functions to local communities.

Objectives of the project

Project implementation period: Sepember 1, 2014- December 31, 2015

Project location: Karool Dobo village in Chui region and Samarkandek village in Batken region.

-To improve food security of communities living near forests by developing and testing mechanisms for their involvement in the management of forest resources.

- To enhance the standard of living by raising awareness about the importance of nutrition and development of economic activities on the use of natural resources.

- To improve the standard of living and access to food communities living near forest area by creation of appropriate conditions for the development of community forestry.

The main activities of the project

- Conducting a needs assessment with regard of local communities’ access to forest resources.          

- Preparation of joint action plans for mutual forest management.

 - Documentation of the process and organization of the national seminar.

- Assessment of food security and nutrition in the targeted communities.

- Development of strategies to improve nutrition in the targeted communities through the effective management of forest resources.

- Documentation of the process and elaboration of information materials on nutrition.

- Exploring the potential of communities and areas.

- Identification of possible conditions for the creation of models of community forestry and potential for agroforestry development.
