Project “ Kyrgyz Traditional Pastoral and Ecological Knowledge Dissemination and providing Support to the Community on Co-management of Mountainous Ecosystems in the Kyrgyz Republic”

From everlasting Kyrgyz people get knowledge from nature, lived in harmony with environment, without harming plants and earth.  Nowadays we can see just remains of that knowledge, which has been accumulated for thousands years. Modern Kyrgyz continuing to use ancestors’ knowledge , without idea of its origins, much of information has been lost and changed. Today there are few people in Kyrgyzstan who know everything about their culture, way of life, traditions and customs of native Kyrgyz. Whereas  Traditional Knowledge built the spirit of the nation. With purpose to extend and resume traditional pastoral and ecological knowledge, RDF has launched a project “ Kyrgyz Traditional Pastoral and Ecological Knowledge Dissemination and Providing Support to the Community Co-management of Mountainous Ecosystems in the Kyrgyz Republic”.

Project Aim

This Project has objectives to ensure resilience of Kyrgyz communities in unfavorable governance context in country in relation to management of natural resources, changing climate conditions and degradation of natural resources by reviving and strengthening Kyrgyz traditional values and approaches in management and maintaining culturally rich and environmentally sustainable livelihoods within the mountainous ecosystems.

Project location: 7 regions of KR, territories in China, Tajikistan, where live native Kyrgyz people;

Project Objectives

- Research, recording and publication of Kyrgyz pastoral and ecological traditional knowledge based on the analysis of the previously used information and published materials;

- RDF will facilitate fund raising and provide capacity building support to Pastoralist’ Network Kyrgyz El Akyl Kazyna (KEAK);

- Strengthening the pastoral network for joining efforts in preservation and dissemination of the traditional knowledge;

- Carrying out field work in the country and abroad;

- RDF will organize an international conference with academia and practitioners of TK to discuss major problems and issues in preservation and application of TK. This will provide a unique opportunity for exchange of knowledge and methods, to share experience, discuss common problems and ways to address them, as well as to demonstrate results.

-  Participatory monitoring of the community ecosystem conservation management plans of meikyn jamaats (local communities) on promotion of the co-management model of forest and bicultural diversity and strengthening their capacity.

 

Expected results

--The RDF will undertake further field work with in-depth interviews, making photos and short films on traditional pastoral and ecological knowledge in Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and China to finalize and issue improved series of books on Traditional Knowledge and one compilation book and film on Traditional Knowledge to be used for dissemination for academic and educational purposes in Kyrgyzstan and abroad. 

-The implementation of micro-grant project in communities to sustainable forest management ecosystem, strengthening the capacity of Jamaat in two pilot areas;

- The contribution of traditional knowledge materials in the rational use of pastures livestock that will help assess the condition of pastures and contribute to the improvement of degraded pastures and resources;

- Traditional knowledge will help local farmers in livestock, animal care and grazing, also help to women and young people in the education of children and recreation, maintaining best practices and technologies of the traditional knowledge.
