Photo-voice fair in Batken

On May 28-29 RDF held mobile exhibitions in Orto-Boz village of Ak-Tatyr aiyl okmotu, Ak-Sai village of Ak-Say aiyl okmotu of Bakten rayon in Batken oblast and Hodja-Alo village of Chorkuh jaomat of Isfara rayon in Sogd oblast in Tajikistan, where were shown photos of participants of Voices of Women and Youth in Promoting Peace and Good Neighborhood project. The project is funded by Local Government Initiative (Soros Foundation) through the Social Integration Centre. During exhibitions participants of the photo-research presented their photo-stories (small essays with comments on each photo) and photos. In addition, there were joint discussions between representatives of the Kyrgyz and Tajik local communities.

There were more than hundred photos selected from 2000 photos of photo-research participants and shown on the exhibitions. Each photo subjected on specific topic, but all of them are about the surrounding everyday life: borders, broken water pump and tray with holes, dried near village pastures and dead fields, youth fringing around, lack of roads in the streets – everything that is somehow connected to the conflict. After looking on photos, finally you come to the understanding that the driver of the conflicts is not people, but in lack of water and land, and other resources, unemployment and worthless infrastructure, and not demarcated borders. After understanding and assuming this, people become more tolerant t each other. “Our enemies are not neighbors, but refuse tips, lack of water and lands, drought and landslips. Let’s see no opponents in each other, but strive against our common foes together and jointly” – project coordinator Kuluipa Akmatova said during her welcoming speech on exhibitions and presenting photo cameras to participated local communities’ members.

There were formal and informal community leaders on the exhibitions, photo research participants, Neighborhood Building Network members, as well as those who wished “to see their communities by eyes of youth and women”. It should be mentioned that youth and women were selected as project target groups not accidentally, as in particular they are most socially vulnerable community members, and their voices are not heard. If they are able to express their voice and opinion, they will be able to make contribution to strengthening peace and building good neighborhood relations between two people.

Due to not demarcated borders, and lack of natural, economic and social resources, day by day ethnic conflicts become harder and harder to control and manage in these border communities. However, as it was noted by local dwellers, such kind of initiatives on promoting peace and harmony creates new basis for good relations development which certainly makes people to hope and believe in time to come.
