RDF Study Tour to Canada

The RDF team consisting of Zina Alieva, the RDF director, Kuluipa Akmatova, trainer and community mobilization specialist and Jyldyz Tabaldieva, representing the business sector, visited Canada from November 2 to 9 2008. It was invited by the Community Foundation of Canada to attend "Our Communities. Our World" Conference.

Prior to the Conference, the RDF team spent 3 days in Ottawa where it was  hosted by the Community Foundation of Ottawa (CFO). The CFO is the sixth largest, and one of the oldest (founded in 1987) community foundations in Canada. It stewards about 600 funds entrusted to it and its annual grantmaking is about $5 million (2006). Growing and nurturing the philanthropic impulse is a unique and much-valued role of the community foundation. Over the last several years, the CFO embarked on several new initiatives, including ENGAGE! and Ottawa Youth in Philanthropy programs, in order to support emerging community leaders, and share its knowledge and expertise with the younger generation. The RDF representatives met with members of the CFO Board of Governors, staff and community partners and broadly discussed the community development and governance, working with donors, grantmaking and community initiatives. In Ottawa, the RDF team also visited the headquarters of the Community Foundations of Canada and met with its senior management and regional coordinators. They briefed the RDF group about the community foundation movement in Canada and shared with their vast experience and best practices. Canada's community foundation movement was born in Winnipeg in 1921. Since then, the idea has flourished building and strengthening communities of all sizes from coast to coast.

Attending the CFC "Our Communities. Our World" Conference in Montreal gave the RDF team an opportunity to meet with representatives of the community foundations from all over the world. More than 700 participants representing community foundations and supporting organizations from North and South Americas, Europe, Asia, Africa and CIS countries attended the Conference. The Conference participants were exposed not only to the very specifics of running a community foundation but also to the philosophy of philanthropy and global issues through presentations of the outstanding thinkers, scholars and public figures. It was a perfect place for networking with various foundations and institutions working in the field of community foundation development. There were five conference themes:

- Getting It Done: skills development. These sessions were focused on the nuts and bolts (finance, administration, communications, etc.) of running a community foundation;

- More Than Dollars: making an impact beyond grantmaking and fund development. How community foundations can influence and serve their communities in non-monetary ways;

- The Bigger Picture: a focus on how current and emerging issues affect our work. Explore ways to seize community opportunities and manage within wider external trend;

- Philanthropy's Changing Role: dialogue on the role of philanthropic organizations and their place in society

- Burning Issues: explore social and other complex issues in our society.

Discussions on burning issues of the modern philanthropy and mutual sharing of knowledge and experiences took place at numerous panel sessions. Here is a small portion of the topics discussed at the panels: Working Together - Engaging Government and the Non-Profit Sector; Local Mission - Global Vision: Community Foundations in the 21st Century; The Ethics of the Community Foundation Advocacy; Enhancing Board Effectiveness: It's an Ongoing Journey; Sustainability of the Community Foundations: A New Perspective; Community Foundations: Complex Environmental Challenges.

At the Conference the RDF team had participated in peer learning and sharing meeting arranged by the Global Fund for Community Foundations. It was an excellent opportunity to meet with GFCF grantees from different countries and be oriented on their activities, challenges and achievements. Gatherings like this ensure that community foundations large and small learn from one other.

The RDF team returned home full of new knowledge and inspiration to start a community foundation in Kyrgyzstan.
